AI4Chat's AI photo editor works in one window: upload a photo, type the change you want (“make the grey sky a clear evening blue”, “take the bin out of the left corner”), pick a model, and the edited version appears in the same window. You never paint a mask. What most editors don't show you is which model did the work. Ours puts Nano Banana, Nano Banana Pro, Flux Kontext, Seedream 4.5 and Qwen Image in the same menu, and their makers built each one for slightly different jobs, so below is how we choose between them.

How the AI photo editor works
Edit a photo with a text prompt
- 1
Upload one photo, or up to five
Any normal image file from your phone or computer. On an iPhone, choose a picture from your library instead of the “Take Photo” option inside the upload button; the editor asks Apple users to skip that option.
- 2
Describe the change
Say what should change and what must stay. If your first attempt is two words, press Enhance Prompt and the editor rewrites it into a fuller instruction you can still edit.
- 3
Pick a model and a size
The resolution menu updates for each model, so a portrait crop, a 16:9 banner and a square post are all a click away.
- 4
Generate, then keep going
Download the result, or feed it back in as the next input for a second change. For a quick crop or brightness tweak, the Basic Edits button opens the image editor.
Which AI model should you use for each kind of edit?
We have not run a formal benchmark, so the picks below lean on two things we can stand behind: what each model's maker says it is good at, and how the model is set up inside our editor. Treat it as a first pick. When a result misses, try the same prompt on a second model before you rewrite anything.
A first pick for common edits
- Remove a person, blur a background, add color to a black and white photo
- Nano Banana. Google lists these exact local edits for Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. In our editor it takes up to 5 photos and 10 aspect ratios.
- Change the words on a sign, label or poster
- Nano Banana Pro, then Flux Kontext. Google calls Pro its best model for legible text, and Black Forest Labs says to put the old and new words in quotes. Pro runs at 1K in our editor.
- A chain of small edits on the same person
- Flux Kontext. Black Forest Labs says Kontext keeps a character consistent across several edits. The dev, pro and max versions are all in the menu.
- Put a product into a scene, or several people into one shot
- Nano Banana Pro. Google says it blends many inputs and keeps up to 5 people looking like themselves. Our editor takes up to 5 photos per edit.
- Keep the fine detail of a reference, like a logo or a fabric
- Seedream 4.5. ByteDance says it strictly preserves the details of reference images. It outputs at 2K here.
- Restyle the whole picture as a painting, anime or a film shot
- Qwen Image. Qwen says it keeps meaning and realism while editing. In our editor it runs as classic image-to-image, repainting the full frame from yours.

Prompts that work, by type of edit
Almost every good edit prompt has the same three parts: the change, what must stay put, and how the result should look. Leave out the middle part and the model feels free to “improve” things you never mentioned, which is how a sky swap ends up with a new haircut.
| Instead of | Write |
|---|---|
| Cleanup: “remove stuff” | Remove the two people walking behind the bench. Fill the space with the same path and grass. Keep the couple on the bench unchanged. |
| Light: “make it brighter” | Lift the shadows on her face as if a window were to the left. Keep the background exposure as it is. |
| Background: “new background” | Replace the office behind him with a softly blurred city street at dusk. Keep his pose, shirt and the light on his face. |
| Style: “make it art” | Turn this photo into a loose watercolor painting with visible paper texture. Keep the composition and the red umbrella. |
| Text: “fix the sign” | Replace “OPEN DAILY” on the shop sign with “OPEN LATE”. Same font, same color, same position. |
Remove the [object] from the [left/right/background]. Fill the gap with the surrounding [floor/wall/sand]. Change nothing else. Replace the sky with a clear late-afternoon sky. Keep the people, buildings and shadows exactly as they are. Change her jacket to a [color] wool coat. Keep her face, hair and pose unchanged. Make this look like it was shot on a sunny morning. Warm light from the right, soft shadows. Turn this into a black and white film photo with fine grain. Keep every detail sharp. Add color to this black and white photo. Natural skin tones, faded colors that suit the era. Extend the background on both sides so the photo fits a 16:9 banner. Do not move or resize the subject. Replace the text “[old words]” with “[new words]”. Same font, size and color.
Swap the words in square brackets. Name what must stay in every prompt.
How to combine several photos into one
Select two to five images in the upload box. The model menu then shrinks to the models that accept more than one photo. Pick Nano Banana or Nano Banana Pro from that short list; they are the ones the editor itself recommends for combining. Google built the first version for multi-image fusion (“put an object into a scene, restyle a room with a color scheme or texture”) and says the Pro version keeps up to five people looking like themselves.
Refer to your photos by the order you uploaded them: “the first image”, “the second image”. That is how the editor's own examples are written, and it stops the model from guessing which face belongs in which scene. Say how big things should be relative to something already in the shot, because scale is where combined photos most often look pasted on. If a result ignores your second photo, run it again: the lighter model the editor sometimes hands requests to works from the first image only.
Put the woman from the first image into the café in the second image, sitting at the window table. Keep her face, hair and clothes exactly as in the first image. Match the café's soft window light on her. Place the bottle from the second image on the marble counter in the first image, about the height of the cup beside it, with a soft shadow to the right. Replace the background in the first image with the beach from the second image. Keep the subject from the first image in the foreground at the same size.
Upload the person or product first and the scene second, then keep that order in the prompt.
Where an AI photo editor is the wrong tool
Every model in the menu redraws the picture rather than painting over a few pixels. That is why one sentence can relight a whole room, and it is also why small things you never mentioned can shift. After each edit, check hands, jewelry, logos and any writing before you post it.
Good fit
- Changing one thing in a real photo: a sky, a stray person, a jacket color
- Trying five versions of an idea before you commit to one
- Combining a person or product with a new scene
- Restyling a photo as a painting, sketch or film shot
- Fixing an old print, as in our old photo restoration guide
Use something else
- A clean cutout on a transparent background: the background remover is built for that
- Print-size files straight out of the edit: run the result through the upscaler at 2x or 4x
- Pixel-exact retouching for a client proof: a brush-based editor gives you that control
- Dozens of photos with the same edit: the editor makes one image per run
For the edits people ask about most, we wrote separate guides: removing objects and people, trying a new hairstyle and redesigning a room. For a wider set of starting points, the photo prompt library has more to copy.
Questions people ask
Is the AI photo editor free?
You need a free AI4Chat account to open it, but its starting balance (1 image credit) does not cover an edit, which costs 10 credits or more. Edits run on AI4Chat Unlimited, which starts with a 7-day free trial; the price for your country is shown before you pay.
Can I use it without signing up?
No. Every edit runs under an account, so you sign up first and the editor opens right after. Signing up only asks for an email address.
What is the best AI model for editing photos?
For a single change to a real photo, start with Nano Banana. Move to Nano Banana Pro when the edit involves text or several photos, and to Flux Kontext when you plan a long chain of small edits on the same person.
Can AI change the text in a photo?
Yes. Put the old and the new words in quotation marks and ask for the same font, size and color. Google and Black Forest Labs both show text edits for Nano Banana Pro and Flux Kontext, so try them in that order.
Will the edit keep my face the same?
Your best chance is to ask for it. Say “keep her face, hair and expression unchanged” and change one thing per round. A prompt that asks for a new outfit, a new place and new lighting all at once gives the model room to change the face too.
How many photos can I combine at once?
Up to five per edit with Nano Banana or Nano Banana Pro. Upload the subject first and the scene second, and refer to them as the first and second image in your prompt.
