AI4Chat's text to speech tool turns typed or pasted text into an MP3 you can download. You pick a model first (Kokoro-82M, Orpheus-3B, Sesame CSM-1B, ElevenLabs Turbo v2.5 or our default AI4Chat Voice Engine), then a voice. Every voice we offer today is an English voice, so if you came for Hindi, Tamil or Telugu narration, read the language section before you spend credits.

Which text to speech model should you use?
Start on Kokoro. It costs the same as the default engine and gives you six voices instead of two. The AI4Chat Voice Engine is a two-voice preset on the same Kokoro model, so there's no quality reason to stay on it once you've heard the others.
Move to Orpheus when the script has feeling in it: a short story, an ad read, a character line. It's built for intonation and emotion and costs seven times what Kokoro does, which is fair for a 300-word piece and silly for a long help article. Try Sesame CSM for lines that should sound like half of a conversation. ElevenLabs is the premium option and by far the most expensive; we'd keep it for the final take of something people will hear many times, after the wording is settled on a cheaper model.
| Model | Voices |
|---|---|
| AI4Chat Voice Engine (default) | Ruby, Nathan |
| Kokoro-82M | Bella, Echo, Alex, Jessica, Nicole, Sky |
| Orpheus-3B | Tara, Leah, Jess, Leo, Dan, Mia, Zac |
| Sesame CSM-1B | One default voice |
| ElevenLabs Turbo v2.5 | Rachel, Roger, Aria, Charlie |

How to turn text into speech on AI4Chat
From text to MP3 in four steps
- 1
Open the tool
Go to text to speech and sign in. If you aren't signed in, you're sent to create a free account and then land back on the tool.
- 2
Paste your text
Up to 3,000 characters per clip. The counter under the box shows how many you've used, and the credit cost updates as you type.
- 3
Pick a model, then a voice
The voice menu changes with the model, so choose the model first. If you're unsure, Kokoro with Bella is a sensible default.
- 4
Generate, listen, download
Most clips come back in seconds; the page warns that some models can take up to 30 seconds. Play it, download the MP3, or regenerate. Earlier clips stay in a gallery on the same page.
How many credits will my script use?
Speech is charged in blocks of 1,000 characters, rounded up, with a minimum of one block. Spaces, line breaks and punctuation all count. The rounding is where people lose credits without noticing: a 2,050-character script costs three blocks, and trimming 51 characters brings it down to two.
Count your script's characters before you generate
The character count includes spaces, like the tool's own counter. Over 3,000? Split it at a paragraph break and make two clips.
How to write text that sounds natural read aloud
Text written for the eye often sounds wrong in the ear. A few habits fix most of it:
- Punctuation is your pause control. There's no speed slider, so a full stop asks for a beat, a comma for a shorter one, and a paragraph break for the longest.
- Keep sentences short. A sentence with three clauses comes out rushed or flat on every model.
- Spell out what you want said: "forty dollars a month", "four point five stars". Models guess at digits, and not always the way you would.
- Write acronyms the way you say them. "S Q L" and "sequel" come out differently, and only you know which your audience uses.
- Kokoro's authors note that voices can sound weak on very short lines and rush on very long passages. Avoid one-word clips and break a wall of text into paragraphs.
- On Orpheus, Canopy Labs documents emotive tags you type into the text:
<laugh>,<chuckle>,<sigh>,<cough>,<sniffle>,<groan>,<yawn>and<gasp>. Test one on a short line first.
No script yet? Write it in AI4Chat chat and ask for "short spoken sentences, numbers written as words". Fixing wording in text is cheaper than regenerating audio.
Most people never read the manual. So here is the short version. Step one. Charge the speaker for two hours before you use it. Step two. Hold the power button for three seconds, until the light turns blue. Step three. Open Bluetooth on your phone, and choose the name that starts with S, K, one, two. That's it. If the light blinks red, the battery is low. Charge it, and try again.
A sample we wrote to show the format, not a recording. Paste it in and compare two voices.
Can it read Hindi, Tamil or Telugu?
Not with dedicated voices, not yet. All 20 voices in the tool are English voices, and we'd rather say so here than let you find out after a paid clip.
The one model built for more than English is ElevenLabs. Its documentation lists Hindi and Tamil among the 32 languages its v2.5 models cover; Telugu isn't on that list. Our four ElevenLabs voices are labelled English and we haven't published language-specific voice lists, so if you try Hindi or Tamil text, run one short sentence first and listen to the pronunciation before a long script goes through at the top rate.
If Indian-language narration is most of what you need, a tool with native voices for that language will serve you better today.
Who should use AI4Chat for text to speech?
It makes sense if you already use AI4Chat for chat or images and want voice in the same account, or if you like to compare engines: one script through Kokoro, Orpheus and ElevenLabs, side by side in one gallery. Pair it with the AI music generator and you can make a narration and a backing track on the same site.
It's the wrong pick for free, private English speech for a one-off: browser-based tools that run Kokoro on your own device need no account. And it's the wrong pick for non-English voices, for the reasons above.

Questions people ask
Is AI4Chat text to speech free?
You need a free account to use it. Speech draws on the same credit balance as images, and a free account's one-time balance (20 chat credits and 1 image credit) doesn't cover a clip, since the cheapest one costs 10 credits. AI4Chat Unlimited starts with a 7-day free trial, and the price for your country is shown on the pricing page before you pay.
How long can my text be?
3,000 characters per clip, spaces included. For anything longer, split it at paragraph breaks, make one clip per part with the same voice, and join the MP3s in any audio editor.
Can I change the speed or pitch of the voice?
There's no slider for either. Pace comes from the text itself: shorter sentences and more full stops slow the delivery down. To change pitch, pick a different voice.
Can I clone my own voice?
No. The tool uses the preset voices listed on this page and doesn't offer voice cloning.
Can it read a PDF or a web page aloud?
It reads text you paste in, not files or links. For a long PDF, ask file chat for a short spoken-style summary and voice that instead.
