The best ChatGPT alternatives, picked by what you use it for

Seven options, each matched to one kind of work, with its free plan and starting price taken from the maker's own page. Plus a straight answer for the people who should keep ChatGPT.

The best ChatGPT alternative depends on the work you do most. Claude is the pick for long documents and careful writing, Perplexity for research where you want to see sources, Gemini if your day runs on Gmail and Google Docs, and Copilot if it runs on Word and Excel. If you want to pay nothing, DeepSeek's free app and Gemini's free plan are the strongest places to start. And if ChatGPT already does what you need, stay: its free plan includes unlimited everyday text chats, which is more room for plain chat than Claude's or Gemini's free plans give you.

Which ChatGPT alternative fits which job?

Most lists of ChatGPT alternatives run to 20 or 30 names. You don't need 30. You need the one that is better than ChatGPT at the thing you do every day, and a clear idea of what it costs. Every plan detail and price below comes from the provider's own pricing or help page, checked in November 2026.

Claude, for long documents and careful writing

Anthropic's free plan runs its Sonnet and Haiku models and includes web search, file creation, code running, memory and voice mode. People move to Claude for writing that keeps a steady voice and for working through long files: Anthropic lists a context window of up to 1M tokens, depending on the model. The catch on the free plan is the limit, which resets every 5 hours and again every week, and steady users hit it.

Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month when you pay $200 for the year, and adds the Opus models, Research and Claude Code. Its plans don't list image generation, so keep another tool for pictures.

Perplexity, for research with sources

Perplexity answers questions the way a search engine would if it wrote you a paragraph, and it shows where each claim came from. Its help centre says the free plan gives practically unlimited basic searches but very limited Pro Searches, with no advanced models and no image generation. Pro is $17 a month and Max is $167 a month, both billed annually.

Pick it when you would otherwise open ten tabs to check a fact. For fiction or a long brainstorm, a chat assistant like ChatGPT or Claude is the more natural fit.

Gemini, if your work lives in Google apps

Google's free plan has the longest feature list of the big three: the Flash-Lite model, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice chats, Canvas and Gems, plus 15 GB of storage. The paid plans are where the Google tie-in pays off. Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month, ₹399 in India) puts Gemini inside Gmail and doubles the free usage. AI Pro ($19.99, ₹1,950) adds Gemini in Docs, the Pro model and 5 TB of storage.

One limit to know before you paste a long report: Google says Gemini works with a 32k-token context window without a plan, 128k on AI Plus and 1M on AI Pro.

Copilot, if you work in Word, Excel and Outlook

Microsoft's Copilot has a free version, but the reason to choose it is Office. Microsoft 365 Personal ($9.99 a month or $99.99 a year in the US, ₹689 a month in India) puts Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, with usage limits, and gives more Copilot chat than the free version. Premium ($19.99 a month, ₹1,999 in India) is the plan Microsoft labels best for AI. If you already pay for Microsoft 365, check what your plan includes before you buy another AI subscription.

DeepSeek or Gemini free, if you want to pay nothing

DeepSeek's official app and website offer free chat with its latest models; V4.1 is the newest release its site names. Paired with Gemini's free plan, that covers most everyday questions without a bill. Read the privacy terms of any free app before you paste in work documents. Our guide to free AI models and their limits goes through every free plan in detail.

AI4Chat, if you want images, voice and writing tools in one account

AI4Chat is a different kind of alternative. Next to the chat you get a photo editor, an image generator, text to speech, a music maker, a humanizer that rewrites stiff drafts and an app builder, all on one login. The chat itself has incognito mode, folders, branching and a web search switch, and chat with files handles PDFs.

It makes sense if you used ChatGPT mostly for pictures and writing help and would otherwise pay for two or three separate tools. It is not the right choice if you need one specific OpenAI or Anthropic model by name. For that, go straight to the company that makes it.

Three more worth a look

Mistral's assistant, now called Vibe (it was Le Chat), has a free plan with limited messages and web searches, a Pro plan at $14.99 a month before tax, and a $5.99 student price. Meta AI is free with a login and does images and deep research. Grok is free to try on the web and in its apps, with SuperGrok for higher limits; its price wasn't on any page we could read, so we have left it out.

When ChatGPT is still the better choice

ChatGPT is still the most complete single app, and switching has a real cost: your chat history, your saved instructions and your habits stay behind. Keep it if one of these describes you.

Stay with ChatGPT if

  • You use a bit of everything (chat, image creation, voice, file analysis and search) and like having it in one place.
  • You mostly want plain chat for free. Free and Go both include unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse guardrails.
  • You rely on scheduled tasks or custom GPTs, which start on Go, or on Codex for code, which stays limited until Plus.
  • You talk to it out loud. Voice is on every plan, and voice with video starts on Go.
  • Your team already shares chats, projects or GPTs there, and moving everyone costs more than any saving.

If you are happy with ChatGPT but not with the bill, the better move is often a different ChatGPT plan rather than a different app. Our page on cheaper alternatives to ChatGPT Plus shows what you lose by dropping to Go or Free, and our AI subscription price list has every plan from every provider on one page. Where AI4Chat fits, and where it doesn't

Why people pick AI4Chat

  • Chat, a photo editor, an image generator, text to speech, music and a humanizer under one login and one bill.
  • Chat extras that help with real work: incognito chats, folders, branching a conversation and a web search switch.
  • AI4Chat Unlimited starts with a 7-day free trial, and the price for your country is shown before you pay.

Where it falls short

  • The free account is a small sample, not a free tier. For daily use you need the paid plan.
  • No video tools on the current plan.
  • If you want a specific frontier model from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google, its maker's own app is the place to get it.

How to test an alternative before you cancel anything

A one-week trial run

  1. 1

    Pick three real tasks

Take three things you asked ChatGPT this week, such as an email reply, a summary of a long file and a planning question. Real tasks tell you more than test prompts.

  2. 2

Run them in both apps on the same day

Paste the same words into ChatGPT and the alternative. Note which answer you would actually send or use, and how much you had to fix.

  3. 3

Use the free plan until you hit a limit

Most free plans cap you every few hours or every week. Hitting the cap once tells you whether the free plan is enough or which paid plan you would need.

  4. 4

    Only then change your subscription

Cancel or downgrade ChatGPT after the alternative has handled a normal week. Export anything you want to keep first.

Questions people ask

What is the best free alternative to ChatGPT?

For most people it's Gemini's free plan, which includes image generation, Deep Research and Gemini Live voice chats, or DeepSeek's free app for plain chat. If what you want is plain chat for free, ChatGPT's own free plan is hard to beat: it includes unlimited everyday text chats.

Which apps are most like ChatGPT?

Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Mistral's Vibe work the most like ChatGPT: a chat box, file uploads, voice and web search. Perplexity looks similar but is built around search with sources rather than open-ended chat.

Is Claude better than ChatGPT?

For long documents and writing that needs a consistent tone, many people prefer Claude. ChatGPT covers more ground in one app, with image creation, voice with video and a looser free plan. Our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison runs both on the same tasks.

Is there a ChatGPT alternative with no sign-up?

AI4Chat needs a free account before your first message. Most assistants ask you to sign in before they save your chats or raise your limits, so expect to make an account wherever you end up. AI4Chat asks only for an email address.

Can I use ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini in one app?

Some apps put several models behind one login. If you need a particular model from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google, its maker's own app is the surest way to get exactly that model, so check what any bundle really gives you before you cancel. AI4Chat's focus is different: one chat plus image, voice and writing tools in one account.
