The cheapest alternative to ChatGPT Plus is often another ChatGPT plan. Free and Go both include unlimited everyday text chats, and Go gives quick answers the same 54K context window as Plus. Plus earns its $20 a month if you use its advanced reasoning models, full deep research, Codex or Sites. If you would rather leave OpenAI, Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month and Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 with Copilot inside Word and Excel. Claude Pro sits close to Plus at $17 a month on a yearly plan.
What ChatGPT Plus gives you that Go and Free don't
OpenAI's own comparison table is the best place to start, because the cheapest way to cut the bill is to drop a tier without changing apps. These rows come straight from it.
| Free | Go | Plus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text chats | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Quick context | 27K | 54K | 54K |
| Biggest file, reasoning | Varies | ~320 pages | ~320 pages |
| Scheduled tasks | ✕ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Voice with video | ✕ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Image creation | Limited | ✓ | ✓ |
| Deep research | Limited | Limited | ✓ |
| Codex | Limited | Limited | ✓ |
| Reasoning models | ✕ | ✕ | ✓ |
| Sites, charts | ✕ | ✕ | ✓ |
| Legacy models | ✕ | ✕ | ✓ |
"Unlimited" is subject to OpenAI's abuse guardrails. Go may include ads, OpenAI says.
Read the table from the bottom up. The last five rows are what Plus is really for: the stronger reasoning models, full deep research, Codex for code, Sites and the extra image and chart features. If you rarely touch those and mostly ask questions, draft emails and summarise documents, Go covers the same ground with the same context window for quick answers. Free covers it too, with a smaller window (OpenAI puts it at about 12 pages of text per message) and tighter limits on uploads and images.
OpenAI doesn't print Go's price in its help article, and the pricing page shows it at checkout for your country, so check it there before you switch.

Price is only half of it. Each of these is better than Plus at something and worse at something else, so the useful question is what you would lose. Here is what each one trades away.
| Option and price | You gain | You give up |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Go: price at checkout | Same app and history, scheduled tasks, voice with video | Advanced reasoning models, full deep research, Codex; may show ads |
| ChatGPT Free: $0 | Unlimited everyday text chats | Smaller context, limited uploads, images and deep research |
| Google AI Plus: $4.99 (₹399) | Gemini in Gmail, 2x free usage, 128k context, 400 GB storage | No Pro model; Flash only |
| Google AI Pro: $19.99 (₹1,950) | Pro model, 1M context, 5 TB storage, YouTube Premium Lite | Saves almost nothing unless you use Google apps |
| Claude Pro: $17 yearly or $20 | Opus models, Research, Claude Code, up to 1M context | No image generation listed; 5-hour and weekly limits |
| Perplexity Pro: $17, billed yearly | Answers with sources for research | Monthly price not shown; built for search, not long chats |
| Microsoft 365 Personal: $9.99 (₹689) | Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook; 1 TB storage | Usage limits; AI for the account owner only |
| Mistral Pro: $14.99 plus tax | More messages, coding in the terminal or IDE, slides and spreadsheets | Fair-usage limits; price is before tax |
| AI4Chat Unlimited: price by country, 7-day free trial | Photo editor, image generator, text to speech, music, humanizer | Not a way to get OpenAI's Plus models; no video |

Two patterns show up. Google and Microsoft are cheapest when you already live in their apps, because part of what you pay for is storage and Office or Gmail features you might be buying anyway. Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro are not much cheaper than Plus. You would switch to them for what they do better (long documents for Claude, cited research for Perplexity), not to save money. Our full AI subscription price list has every tier, including India prices, and ChatGPT vs Claude compares answers task by task.
Is ChatGPT Plus worth $20 a month?
Keep Plus if you
- Use the advanced reasoning models for hard problems, maths or analysis.
- Run deep research reports more than a few times a month.
- Write or fix code with Codex, or build pages with Sites.
- Want early access to new features and the older models you are used to.
Drop to Go or Free if you
- Mostly ask quick questions, draft emails and summarise documents.
- Haven't opened deep research or Codex in the last month.
- Make a few images a week, not dozens.
- Can live with a smaller context window or, on Go, the odd ad.
Plus is good value for people who use its top features every week. It is poor value for people paying out of habit for a chat they could have on Free. Look at your last month of chats before you decide. If nothing in it needed the bottom five rows of the table above, you are probably in the second group.
Before you cancel ChatGPT Plus
Five things to do first
- Check your renewal date. Plus is billed monthly, so cancelling stops the next charge, not the current month.
- Download anything you need: long chats, files you made, deep research reports.
- Run your three most common tasks on the plan or app you plan to move to, on the same day.
- If you share custom GPTs or projects with others, check they will still work for you on the lower plan.
- Look up Go's price for your country at checkout. It may be the only change you need.
Where AI4Chat fits
Some people pay for Plus mainly to make images and polish writing. If that is you, AI4Chat may cover more of your week for less: one login gets you a chat assistant with incognito chats, folders and a web search switch, plus a photo editor, an image generator, text to speech, a music maker and a humanizer. AI4Chat Unlimited starts with a 7-day free trial, and the price for your country is shown before you pay.
It is not a cheaper copy of Plus. If the reason you pay is OpenAI's reasoning models, Codex or deep research, stay with OpenAI and pick the plan that matches how much you use them.
Questions people ask
Is there a cheaper version of ChatGPT Plus?
Yes. ChatGPT Go sits below Plus. It keeps unlimited everyday text chats, scheduled tasks and voice with video, but drops the advanced reasoning models, full deep research and Codex, and may show ads. OpenAI shows its price at checkout for your country.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Go and Plus?
Both have unlimited everyday text chats and the same 54K context window for quick answers. Plus adds the advanced reasoning models, full deep research, Codex, Sites, interactive charts, legacy models and early access to new features.
Is Claude Pro cheaper than ChatGPT Plus?
Only on a yearly plan. Claude Pro is $20 a month billed monthly, the same as Plus, or $17 a month when you pay $200 up front. ChatGPT Plus has no yearly plan.
Is Google AI Pro better value than ChatGPT Plus?
At $19.99 a month it costs almost the same. It is better value if you use Gmail, Docs and Google Drive, because it adds Gemini inside them and 5 TB of storage. If you don't, the cheaper Google AI Plus at $4.99 is the plan to compare.
How much is ChatGPT Plus in India?
OpenAI supports billing in rupees in India, but the price is shown at checkout and we could not read a fixed rupee figure on its public pages this month, so we have not printed one. In US dollars it is $20 a month.
