What free really means

Free AI models from every big chatbot, and where each plan stops

Every big AI company has a free plan now. They differ in which model you get, how the limits reset and what stays locked. Here is each one, from the providers' own pages, checked in November 2026.

The most generous free AI chat right now is ChatGPT's free plan: unlimited everyday text chats, with separate limits on uploads, images and voice. Gemini's free plan has the most features, including Deep Research, Gemini Live and image generation. Claude's free plan is strong but tight, because it resets every 5 hours and again every week. DeepSeek and Meta AI are free with a login, and Perplexity's free plan is for search, not chat. Below, each free AI model and plan is set out with what you get and where it stops, taken from the companies' own pages.

The best free AI chatbot depends on what you hit first. If you write a lot of short messages, ChatGPT's free plan is the one least likely to stop you. If you want research reports and voice chats without paying, Gemini gives you the most. If you mostly work with long documents, Claude is the strongest free choice until its limit kicks in, and then you wait.

How much text can a free plan hold at once?

The context window is how much of the conversation and your files a model can keep in view at once, measured in tokens (small pieces of words). For scale, OpenAI says its 27K free window takes about 12 pages of text in one message. This is where free and paid plans differ most, and it decides whether a long report fits in one go.

Free plans hold far less text at once than paid ones, with Claude the exception

OpenAI says the free plan takes about 12 pages of text per message for quick answers. Anthropic lists up to 1M tokens on every plan, varying by model.

In practice, a 27K or 32K window is fine for a long email thread or a few pages of notes. It is not enough for a whole contract, a thesis chapter or a big spreadsheet export. If that is your use, either pay for a plan with a bigger window or split the file into parts and ask about each one.

How free AI limits work

Free plans cap you in three different ways, and knowing which one you are on saves a lot of frustration.

Rolling 5-hour window, weekly capClaude Free, Gemini freeweekly total used upA small daily allowancePerplexity Pro Searches on the free planEach day starts again; basic searches stay openUnlimited text, capped extrasChatGPT FreeText chatsUploadsImagesVoicePlain chat has no fixed cap; each extra has its own limit

Rolling windows are the most common. Claude and Gemini both count your use in 5-hour blocks, with a weekly ceiling on top. If you hit the 5-hour limit, you wait a few hours. If you hit the weekly one, you wait days. Long chats and big files use the allowance faster, Anthropic says, so starting a fresh chat for a new topic stretches it.

Daily allowances apply to Perplexity's Pro Searches: a small number on the free plan, while basic searches stay open. Unlimited with separate caps is ChatGPT's model. Plain text chat has no fixed cap (OpenAI still applies abuse guardrails), but uploads, image creation, voice and deep research each have their own limit.

What each free plan gives you

ChatGPT Free

Unlimited everyday text chats, web search, projects, voice and limited image creation, file uploads, data analysis and deep research. OpenAI's plan table lists GPT-6 Luna for free users and keeps its advanced reasoning models for paid plans. Ads may appear on the free plan in some countries. If you need more, ChatGPT Go is the next step up.

Gemini free

Google's free plan uses the Flash-Lite model and includes image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice chats, Canvas, Gems and 15 GB of storage. The 32K context window is the main limit. Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month, ₹399 in India) doubles the usage and raises the window to 128K.

Claude Free

Anthropic's free plan gives you Sonnet and Haiku with web search, file creation, code running, memory across chats, connectors, Artifacts, voice mode, incognito chats and up to 5 projects. The Opus models and Research need Pro. Limits reset every 5 hours and every week, and heavier use runs out faster.

DeepSeek, Meta AI, Copilot and the rest

DeepSeek's official app and website offer free chat with its latest models; V4.1 is the newest release its site names. Meta AI is free with a login and handles image generation, editing and deep research. Microsoft's Copilot app is free, and Microsoft describes its paid Microsoft 365 plans as giving higher Copilot chat, image and voice use than free. Mistral's Vibe (formerly Le Chat) has a free plan with limited messages and web searches. Grok is free to try on the web and in its apps, with SuperGrok for higher limits. None of these pages state exact free limits, so treat them as "free until you hit a wall".

What free plans keep back

Usually free

  • Everyday chat on a fast, lighter model.
  • Web search, and file uploads in small amounts.
  • Voice chats on ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
  • An opt-out from model training on ChatGPT and Claude, the same as on paid plans.

Usually paid

  • The strongest models: Opus on Claude, the advanced reasoning models on ChatGPT, the Pro model on Gemini.
  • Long context for big files, with Claude the exception.
  • Full deep research and coding tools such as Codex and Claude Code.
  • Ad-free use: OpenAI says ads may appear on Free in some countries.

Free AI models you can download

Some people searching for free AI models mean something else: open-weight models you download and run on your own computer, with no account and nothing to run out. That route is free in money but not in effort. You need a capable graphics card, some setup, and you get no web search, voice or app features unless you add them yourself. For most people the free chat plans above are the easier way to use a free model.

What AI4Chat gives free accounts

AI4Chat's free account is a small sample, not a free tier like the ones above. A new account starts with a one-time balance of 20 chat credits and 1 image credit. A first try uses most of it, and it does not top up each month. It exists so you can see how the chat, photo editor, image generator, text to speech and humanizer work before you decide.

For regular use there is AI4Chat Unlimited. It starts with a 7-day free trial, and the price for your country is shown before you pay. If you only need free chat, the free plans from ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude will serve you better. If you want chat and creative tools in one account, the trial is the fair way to judge it.

How to get the most out of free AI plans

Stretch your free limits

  • Use two free plans side by side. When Claude makes you wait, switch to ChatGPT or Gemini for the next few hours.
  • Start a new chat for each new topic. Long chats use up rolling limits faster.
  • Paste only the part of a document you need answered, not the whole file.
  • Save heavy jobs, like deep research and image creation, for the days you need them.
  • Where the app lets you, turn off model training before you paste anything private.
  • Check the plan page every few months. Free plans change, and the limits above were checked in November 2026.
